In the mid-1960s when the price of copper spiked, aluminum wire was manufactured in sizes small enough to use in homes. Aluminum wire requires a larger wire gauge than copper to carry the same current. In North American residential construction, aluminum wire was used to wire entire houses for a short time from the late 1960s to the late 1970s during a period of high copper prices. Wiring devices (outlets, switches, fans, etc.) at the time were not designed with the particular properties of aluminum wire in mind and there were problems with the properties of the wire itself.
Its tendency to oxidize which can result in overheating, being softer than copper and changing shape, resulting in termination point failures. Being incompatible with devices designed for use with copper wiring
Signs of aluminum wiring can include discolored switches or receptacles, flickering lights, or a hot plastic odour stemming from melted insulation.
Problems with Aluminum wires: Aluminum wires have been implicated in house fires. There are several possible reasons why these connections failed. The two main reasons were improper installation and the differences in the coefficient of expansion between aluminum wire used in the 1960s and the terminations.
Hazard Insurance: In some provinces specially in Ontario, home hazard insurance do not cover homes with any aluminum wiring, and some insurance companies that claim to cover it charge a higher premium than for homes with copper wiring or Many insurance companies will not cover properties with aluminum wiring unless the systems are upgraded or replaced with copper wiring from a licensed electrician
Knob & Tube Wiring
Since January 2003 the Electrical Safety Authority has received an increasing number of questions about the safety of knob and tube wiring.
In particular, purchasers or owners of older homes are finding that many insurers will not provide or renew coverage on such properties. In some cases, the insurance companies are requiring a total replacement of this wiring prior to providing insurance coverage. Some insurance companies request that all visible knob and tube wiring be removed, usually within 30 – 90 days of occupancy.
Knob and tube wiring, more recently referred to as open wiring, was a wiring method used in the early 1900s to 1940s in the residential sector. Over the years wiring installation practices have changed in the residential sector and knob and tube wiring is no longer installed; however, parts continue to be available for maintenance purposes.
Homes with knob and tube wiring may not have the electrical capacity to meet today’s needs. As a result, homeowners have modified their electrical system with what the Electrical Safety Authority classifies as unsafe practices
